Managers play one of the most important roles in creating strong teams, consistent programs, and meaningful experiences for youth at BGCP. In this reflective and energizing session, managers will reconnect with the purpose and impact of their role, revisit the BGCP Leadership Competencies, and reflect on how they have grown through this past year’s leadership development series. The focus will be on a common challenge for managers: staying connected to the bigger picture while navigating the day-to-day demands of leading people, solving problems, and supporting quality programs. Managers will leave with a clearer understanding of their leadership impact, a stronger connection to BGCP’s expectations for managers, and a renewed sense of purpose as they step into the year ahead.
Strong safety outcomes depend on clear thinking, efficient decision-making, and shared ownership across all teams. In this interactive session, managers will use a simple, repeatable framework to organize context, identify options, and determine when to act or escalate. The focus is on navigating situations where information is incomplete and the next step isn’t immediately clear. Managers will leave with a practical decision-making structure, stronger confidence in their judgment, and a clearer ability to bring forward thoughtful options that improve both efficiency and safety.
Clear, consistent action is what prevents small concerns from becoming bigger incidents. In this interactive session, staff will use the “See Something, Say Something, Do Something” framework to practice identifying risks, navigating how and when to speak up, and taking role-appropriate action. The focus will be on the real challenge staff face every day: recognizing what matters in the moment, choosing the right pathway to report or escalate, and knowing what action is expected without hesitation. Participants will leave with a shared language for safety, greater clarity on their responsibilities, and practical ways to apply this approach in daily practice.
Participants will build a shared understanding of what high-quality K–5 programming looks like, why each component is essential for student outcomes, and how the program comes to life across the year. This session will focus on aligning leaders to the vision, deepening clarity around the purpose of each component, and setting a strong foundation for implementation ahead of Be Great Week.
In this session, participants will learn the key components of 100%, a core concept from Doug Lemov’s classroom management framework. Using a shared organizational vocabulary, coaches, site leaders, peers, and the Program Strategy team will explore how intentional classroom techniques align toward the goal of getting all youth engaged, all the time. Whether you are new to leading a classroom or a seasoned youth developer, this session grounds practice in common language and strategies that support clarity, consistency, and high expectations. Every technique connects back to one central aim: reaching 100%.
This session introduces the Program Quality Assessment (PQA) as a foundational tool for strengthening program quality. Participants will explore what the PQA is, why BGCP uses it, and how it supports continuous improvement across sites. We will unpack the building blocks of the PQA, examine how it is used in coaching and planning, and build a shared understanding of what the rubric is truly measuring. By the end of the session, participants will feel more confident reading the rubric, interpreting expectations, and using PQA language to reflect on and improve practice.
This session explores Restorative Practices: Community Circles as a powerful strategy for building strong, inclusive program culture. Participants will learn the purpose and framework of community circles grounded in the work of the International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP). The session will clarify how circles foster belonging, voice, and shared responsibility, and support proactive relationship-building. Participants will also walk away with a ready-to-use list of community circles specifically designed for Welcome Week, making it easy to put the framework into action from day one.
This session explores the purpose of BGCP’s Power Hour, with a specific focus on the what and why behind academic tutoring blocks. Participants will gain clarity on how Power Hour supports youth academic growth and reinforces school-day learning. The session will also introduce the centers-based structure used during Power Hour and provide guidance on how to effectively execute a clear, engaging lesson plan within this model. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of how intentional planning and structured facilitation create productive, supportive academic environments for all learners.
Effective tutoring programs are built on two things: a clear curriculum and a consistent way to track whether it's making a difference. In this session, participants will get a comprehensive look at the K-5 academic tutoring program, including the curriculum focus areas for each grade level, how to properly administer student assessments, and how to accurately enter scores into the DnA online assessment platform. Through guided instruction and hands-on practice, participants will walk through each step of the assessment process from start to finish.
BGCP Reads brings us back to the moments when a powerful read aloud transported us into a fictional world and sparked our imagination. In this session, participants will explore BGCP Reads as a read-aloud curriculum, focusing on the intentional intellectual preparation that makes read alouds come alive. We will unpack the key principles that drive engagement—expressive delivery, and meaningful youth interaction. Participants will leave with concrete strategies to plan and facilitate read alouds that captivate young readers, deepen comprehension, and foster a genuine love of stories.
